Over the past two years, I’ve had the pleasure of organizing and leading a variety of events aimed at bringing the history of media to life for diverse audiences:
With the support of Przystanek Pireus in Poznań, I host an ongoing event series called Days of Magic and Media, which features historic devices and hands-on workshops inspired by early forms of moving images. The next sessions will be held in October and November 2024. More details are available on the event’s website.
In collaboration with Dr. Joanna Walewska-Choptiany, we held a workshop titled An Evening of Magic and Media: Discovering the World of Moving Images from 200 Years Ago on April 21, 2024, at Collegium Maius (Toruń, UMK) as part of the Toruń Festival of Science and Art. Participants of all ages had the chance to create their own slides for magic lanterns and thaumatrope animations.
For a senior group in Toruń (Kamienica Inicjatyw), I led lectures with demonstrations, such as What Came Before Cinema? On Moving Images in the 19th Century (2023) and What Did People Play 100 Years Ago? (2024). These sessions included presentations of artifacts from my collection, including magic lanterns and turn-of-the-century games.
During the 3rd Night of Culture at Maius (2024), organized by UMK’s Cultural Studies program, I gave a lecture and demonstration titled Coin-Operated Machines, Pocket Games, Magnetic and Electric Games: The Gaming Culture of the Late 19th and Early 20th Century.
Thank you to everyone who participated and to the organizers who supported this niche initiative. I look forward to seeing you at future events!
