Faculty of Humanities, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń – Project Principal Investigator
This project explores how theater, dance, and other performance arts historically utilized technology and how new media influenced artists in the 19th and 20th centuries. Using a “media archaeology” approach, it examines historical means of communication, such as mechanical theaters and optical projection devices, to gain a better understanding of their roles in the arts. The research sheds light on little-known experiments by artists in Poland and Central Europe who, despite limitations, connected stage performance with technology. The project aims to revise media history by recognizing local innovations and the unique qualities of creators’ work.
